Laboratory Tests to Assess Heavy Metals Exposures

Foodie Body has developed a way for people to search not based on location and past search queries, but rather on their personal chemistry and bioinformatics.

Doctors may use a variety of laboratory tests to help assess exposure to heavy metals and/or rule out other conditions, such as vitamin deficiency or hormone balance, that can contribute to symptoms. Heavy metal testing is usually performed on a blood sample obtained by inserting a needle into a vein in the arm or on a 24-hour urine collection. Special metal-free blood or acid-washed urine containers are used to collect the sample to lower the risk of sample contamination by any outside sources of metal. Urine and blood can both be used for heavy metal testing, but they do not necessarily test for the same forms of a metal. For instance, methylmercury – an organic highly toxic form of mercury found in fish – can be detected in the blood but not in urine. Urine is the preferred sample for measuring inorganic forms of mercury and for measuring arsenic. For lead, blood more accurately correlates with adverse health effects than other fluids or tissues. A doctor will order only the tests that he or she feels are necessary and/or likely to improve the accuracy of a diagnosis.

A simple example of how it works when you use Foodie Body Search:

  • Think your dealing with a certain condition such as abdominal pain, nausea, vomiting, and diarrhea, nervous system symptoms such as numbness, tingling of hands and feet, weakness?  These and other signs may cause one to test for heavy metals in consultation with their physician.
  • Order a direct access test. An independent physician will review and approve your test requests; no doctor’s visit is required.
  • Your lab requisition number will be emailed or texted to your device.
  • Go to the nearest recommended lab in your email or text receipt.
  • Your results may be read online in your profile or emailed or texted to you.
  • The Foodie Body Search Engine will start to calibrate your search results to improve your health from the baseline test level.
  • Repeat these steps to track your progress over time by an independent lab.
